If you had water damage, and the water was not dried properly within 48 hours, it’s possible that you have mold. Although you say the water damage happened a couple of years ago, the presence of the smell suggests that there could be active microbial growth and so you could still be having moisture problems. I would suggest taking samples and sending them to a lab and also checking if you still have moisture problems.
